Litherland 2–3 Moreton
Litherland welcomed current unbeaten league leaders Moreton to a wet and windy Litherland Sports Park today, and what a game it turned out to be. The lads left absolutely everything on the pitch but were unlucky not to get the result their performance deserved.
The match started at a frantic pace, with Litherland straight on the front foot. That early pressure paid off inside the opening two minutes when a perfectly weighted lob from McHugh was taken brilliantly by Williams, who finished calmly to give us the lead. 1–0.
Moreton responded immediately, applying pressure through a series of corners and long throws — a theme that would continue throughout the game. Their persistence paid off on seven minutes when the ball dropped in the box and was fired into the net. 1–1.
The game then settled slightly, and it was Litherland who began to play the better football. Chances were limited at both ends, but Denton came agonisingly close to restoring our lead when he went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only for the Moreton keeper to get the finest of touches to deny him. The teams went in level at the break. 1–1 at half-time.
The second half was a tough spell for Litherland as Moreton struck twice in quick succession. Both goals came from long throws into the box, both taking deflections off our defenders, leaving Deano in goal with no chance. 3–1 to Moreton.
To their credit, the lads showed tremendous character and refused to let their heads drop. Galt went close twice — first with a lovely move that forced an excellent save from the Moreton number one, then again from the resulting corner where his header went just wide.
With time running out, substitute Lee pulled a goal back on 76 minutes to set up a nervy finish. Litherland pushed hard for an equaliser and gave everything right until the final whistle, but Moreton stood firm defensively to see out the game and take all three points.
There are plenty of positives to take from today’s performance, and it’s one the lads should be proud of. To take the current league leaders all the way shows just how much progress is being made in our first-ever season.
A huge thank you to everyone who came down to support the lads on a cold, wet, and windy day — your backing never goes unnoticed.
